Producing more homes resurrecting empty properties

Cromwood Housing has been named as one of the Big Issue magazine’s ‘Changemakers of 2023’ in a special feature listing 100 organisations who are changing people’s lives for the better across the UK.

In the article, the Big Issue reports on Cromwood’s achievements in supporting 35,000 people across London and Greater Manchester, ‘working in partnership with councils and landlords to provide vital housing services to save the lives of people who are homeless, sleeping rough, seeking asylum and fleeing domestic abuse’.

Kevin Murphy, Cromwood’s Strategic Director, who is quoted in the article, said: ‘It’s a real honour to be named by the Big Issue in this year’s Changemakers top 100. We are also grateful for the excellent relationship and support we have with Big Issue Invest – the investment arm of the Big Issue magazine – who have supported our mission to provide really high-quality accommodation to meet the needs of some of the most vulnerable clients.’

Alongside a number of organisations working in housing and homelessness, the list also names change makers working in education, equality and the cost of living crisis, among several other categories, including teachers who set up a food bank in their school and a man on the front line in Ukraine raking his life to help those whose lives have been devastated.

Writing about the Changemakers’ list, Big Issue editor Paul McNamee describes the initiative as ‘a celebration of the people and organisations who have focused, not on themselves, but on making things better for all of us…. They have noticed something that needs done, that which lifts others before themselves, and rather than wait and moan they do it.’ Read the full story in the Big Issue.
